A global study by CyberArk, surveying 2.600 security leaders across 20 countries, found that 90% of organizations suffered at least one identity-related breach in the past year, with over 75% hit more than once. These breaches were largely driven by AI-enhanced phishing, credential theft and deepfake scams — exploiting both human and machine identities.
Why it matters:
As AI systems increasingly act on behalf of both users and enterprises, the stakes for identity verification are rising. Document-based IDV has played a key role in online identity verification, but new challenges are emerging that call for more advanced solutions. To stay ahead, organizations should begin embracing government backed electronic IDs (eIDs) as a modern approach for secure, fast and user-friendly onboarding experiences.
Annet Steenbergen is a digital identity expert, currently taking part in the EU Digital Identity Wallet Consortium (EWC), where she is helping drive the transformation of travel through emerging standards and frameworks.
In this interview, she shares how government-backed digital IDs and initiatives like the EUDI Wallet, are redefining what seamless, secure and privacy-preserving travel can look like.
The EU publishes blueprint for cross-border digital age verification
The European Commission has released a technical blueprint for age verification based on the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet, aiming to provide a secure, privacy-preserving way for users to prove their age online. Pilot implementations are now underway across seven EU member states, with the blueprint designed to support scalability and interoperability across sectors such as online gaming, social media, e-commerce and adult content access.
Why it matters:
This marks a major step towardpractical, privacy-first use cases for reusable digital ID systems. By decoupling identity from personal data exposure, the EU is laying the groundwork for selective disclosure and minimal data sharing, which are core pillars of trustworthy digital identity.
The EU will unveil its pioneering Entry‑Exit System (EES) this autumn, marking the end of passport stamping for non‑EU visitors. Starting 12. October 2025, the system will collect fingerprints and facial biometrics at border crossings across Schengen countries. A phased rollout over six months will gradually increase coverage to full scale by spring 2026.
Login.gov, a secure sign-in service for U.S. government websites, will begin accepting passports for identity checks later this year. Mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) will be supported by March 2026, boosting anti‑fraud measures and making it easier and faster for users across the states to access services across participating federal agencies.
Sri Lanka plans to launch its national digital ID system by early 2026, with rollout expected between February and March, creating sandbox tools for public and private innovation and paving the way for mass citizen registration. The project aims to modernize identity infrastructure and expand digital services.
Bosnia & Herzegovina has launched e‑IDDEEA, its official mobile digital ID app, giving citizens digital versions of their ID card, driver’s licence and passport. Fully compliant with EU’s eIDAS framework, it aims to reach over half a million users in the first year while simplifying access to both public and private services
Digital Trust Hui Taumata – Building Digital Trust for Aotearoa
August 12, 2025 | Wellington, New Zealand
This annual conference leads the conversation around digital trust in Aotearoa, bringing together government, industry leaders, technologists and community advocates. With keynotes, panel discussions and roundtables, the event focuses on four key facets of identity: government digital identity programs, identity for machines, identity for legal entities and identity for individuals.
This federal‑sector‑oriented online workshop centers on identity management as the foundation of modern cybersecurity. Scheduled from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, it emphasizes zero trust strategies across human and machine identities. Topics include modern IAM policy design, identity threat detection and response and identity assurance for service delivery.
This international summit brings together developers, architects and IAM professionals to explore the evolving ecosystem around Keycloak and open identity standards. The event features deep-dive technical sessions, case studies and expert panels on OAuth2, OpenID Connect, SSO and identity federation.
